Rennes Métropole urban district authority covers 37 "communes" with a total population of 385,000.
Rennes métropole leverages resources and competences that could not be provided by the City of Rennes alone. The urban district authority is responsible for major road and transport projects, waste management, housing, urban planning, the environment, culture, tourism, the local economy and employment policy. Rennes métropole has also chosen to support higher education and research. It also makes sure that students find all the amenities they need.
A few examples of measures relevant to higher education and research:
- research start-up grant
- middle-of-the-range research equipment funding
- academic conference support
- science festival
- participation in the Tam Tam event
